Kodokan Judo & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of Feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujitsu. Dr. Kano, president of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo.

As the name implies, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed in Brazil. It was popularized in the United States by the Gracie Family, who had already pioneered the art in their home county of Brazil. This style of Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground fighting art. The emphasis is on controlling an opponent while down and applying submission techniques to end the fight. The majority of the training is done while wearing a Gi (uniform), however, students also train without the gi to gain comfort applying the techniques learned without relying on the specialized gi.
